One of USA temperance leaders, Mrs. Mary Clement Leavitt, visited New Zealand in 1985 and inspired the formation of New Zealand unions. She gave the message that "the home is woman's kingdom" and the woman should organize to defend their home and "attack the enemy alcohol" .
